Peanut is a "hoot" at Alaska Raptor Center

There’s a new bird in town, and she’s a little shy.

After a long career in education, she doesn’t have a lot of patience for the classroom. But for the right student, she still has plenty to teach.

These days, she’s settling into a comfortable retirement, just off Sawmill Creek Road– at the Alaska Raptor Center.

Tribal Sports to introduce teens to the world of business

Sometime soon the baseballs and basketballs used at schools around Alaska may bear the name of Tribal Sports.

That’s a new brand created  by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska and Baden Sports, a Seattle-based sports equipment manufacturing company.

The joint venture was announced this month in Sitka  (6-3-15).

Chautauqua brings music to unexpected places

The New Old Time Chautauqua ended its Southeast Alaska tour in Sitka on Monday (7-13-15) with a performance at the Russian Orthodox Cemetery.

Over 20 performers and local residents came together in song — not in mourning, but to usher in positive energy and build community.

native jazz swings at fine arts camp

If you walk past the Sitka Fine Arts Camp on any given day,

you may hear the sounds of a saxophone, flute or trumpet emanating from one of the buildings.

But this week at camp, the Native Jazz Workshop was in session–and students took their passion for jazz to a new level:

by learning how it intersects with native culture.

odess: sitka opened her arms to me

Big-ticket philanthropy usually goes like this:

Charitable organization makes a pitch; donor writes a check.

There might be some reports to write, and maybe the donor is invited to a nice lunch.

Or at least this is the way it’s supposed to work.

Carol Odess, a major benefactor of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, is an outlier.

Sitkans ‘can-do’ in community kitch

Preserving food is an important activity for many Alaskans, but you’ve got to have the space and the know-how to do it safely.

The Sitka Kitch opened its doors earlier this year, to give Sitkans access to a large, commercial kitchen.

The Sitka Kitch is also ideal for classes.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Cooperative Extension recently brought a food preservation workshop to the Kitch,

and dozens of Sitkans went to sharpen their canning skills.

Sunshine warms Sitka’s July 4th

After ushering in July 4th the night before with a fireworks show that could be seen across the city,

Sitkans enjoyed a warm, sunny Independence Day.

The annual parade started at the roundabout, turned right on Lincoln Street and ended at Totem Square.

Garden classes bring produce aisle home

The high cost of food may be affecting the way residents of Sitka eat.

A study published last year found that 75 percent of Sitkans eat less than 5 fruits and vegetables per day–

only a fraction of the recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But the Sitka Local Foods Network — the author of that report — wants to change that number.

They’re teaching families how to bring the produce aisle to their yards through gardening classes.
